Three Generations

There I am,

barely three months old,

snuggled between and

basking in the love of

my mother and her mother.

My mother had me when

she was thirty-six;

she wanted a second child

to name after

her beloved father Sam

who had just died.

She took the first letter

of his first name

and named me Susan

to remind her of him.

When my mother died

The year I turned thirty-six,

I returned the favor

by changing my middle name

from what it was

to her first name:

Irene

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom.

    1. Her name means “peace.” I think she has given me that as I remember her.
