The Paper it’s Written On

Is paper worth more than the words assigned?

Crumpled scraps, lost, tossed mindlessly away,

God’s precious gift from scented woods of pine.

Drafts of letters, speeches, poems refined;

Doodles and calendars our lives betray.

Is paper worth more than the words assigned?

In exclamation point or underline,

Message or sticky notes, what do we say?

God’s precious gift from scented woods of pine.

A telltale suggestion: look at the spines

Of the books we read; have we gone astray?

Is paper worth more than the words assigned?

The delicate tissue, filmy and fine

Like butterfly’s wings my Bible displays

God’s precious gift from scented woods of pine.

As we utilize this object divine

Could we thoughtfully lift up thanks and prayer?

Is paper worth more than the words assigned?

God’s precious gift from scented woods of pine.

  3. Very thought provoking and valuable Susan. Indeed is the paper worth more than the words? Possibly, but without the paper, the words of value could not be written. The paper is there by Grace and the words are our contribution to creation by choice.

Are our lives worth more than what we do with them? Again possibly as our lives are a gift from God by Grace and what we do with our lives is our contribution to creation by choice.

The canvas and the picture – the atmosphere and oxygen – the solar system and the Earth – the Universe and the Milky Way – life and humanity – and so on.

The pattern repeats – like fractals – what is important to us sits in/on something larger that supports but does not contain as much potential value.

It is said by those who study space that a volume of space the size of a quart bottle that is completely empty as we know it – with no measurable energy or matter – actually contains enough energy to supply the electrical needs for New York City for one year. This energy is the canvas on which our universe is written – upon which the atoms and molecules sit and organize into our world and upon which energy flows in its many forms.

Always that which we value is written on that which supports it, which in turn is written on that which supports it, ad infinitum. And all of this operates by Grace to give us choice.

I think that’s why I always think of it like pebbles dropped in water and the ripples it creates – on and on.
And all that energy you speak of without is the same Holy Spirit within us, creating the energy, words, the love that goes on that paper; as you said, “And all of this operates by Grace to give us choice.”

Always so moved by your contributions here, Paul.

    1. Thank, Pete. Not my usual, but the pebble was dropped and had to follow the ripple. 🙂
