Safe Haven

The depth of my heart hears your deep heart’s call

Your grace has given refuge one more time

Provides safe haven through love’s waterfall

These waves of love swirl me away from world’s harsh squall

Speed me to your embrace with drop and climb

The depth of my heart hears your deep heart’s call

To every whim I used to be the thrall

Now I am branch clinging to Worthy Vine

Provides safe haven through love’s waterfall

Your voice familiar, whisper bold yet small

Of you in this life I have only stime

The depth of my heart hears your deep heart’s call

Your love’s an ocean; buoys my every fall

I float in your grace, new mercy sublime

Provides safe haven through love’s waterfall

Your open palm reveals my name is scrawled

Established “love-grace-mercy’s” paradigm

The depth of my heart hears your deep heart’s call

Provides safe haven through love’s waterfall

As deep calls to deep

At the roar of your waterfalls

All your breakers and waves

Have swept over me

Psalm 42:7

  3. I find it so easy to take the love of God revealed in Scripture for granted, perhaps because I grew up in church and heard the Good News for years. At that point, it’s no longer news, and while it’s good, it’s all too commonplace. “Of course God loves me, it’s kind of His job, right?”
No, it’s not, and yet He does. And His love is profound, perplexing, life-changing, mind-blowing, incomprehensible, unattainable or inexplicable, yet fully, completely, entirely, amazingly, overwhelmingly complete–satisfying the questions of my soul and calling out to the deep, unknowable places within me, the ones He created and understands more fully than I do.
Thanks for a good reminder of what it means to be caught in His love.

    1. Y’know, I think that’s why I’m drawn to write this poetry, David. In the quiet time, as the words stream out of my pencil onto the page, I, too, am reminded of the grandeur you write about here. With each chosen word, my heart swells and my soul fills in places way, down deep in my core.
I’m so glad the words connected with you, too.

  4. Susan that is a great description of how the Holy Spirit calls me and guides me. I just smiled this morning when I read that poem. It always helps me keep my compass when another brother or sister in Christ shares their relationship with Jesus.. Thank you so much for writing this poem.

    Blessings and love to you
