Psalm 139 Part 1

The Riches of Grace

Psalm 139 is one of the most intimate prayers of David. In it, he acknowledges God’s love for him and his hand in his life. He affirms God’s omniscience, omnipresence and omnipotence. He prays for God’s deliverance from his enemies, but also reflects deeply on the times he departed from God’s will, finally asking for redemption for his own lack of righteousness.

In these next four weeks, I’m not going to discuss the literary elegance of David’s song, though there is much artistry in his psalm.

I want to explore with you the deeper harmony of the phrases, the heart song that rests within the words, the reflection of God’s love and grace that resonates within the verses. I want us to explore the relationship David reveals in this beautiful melody.

Let’s begin with verses 1-6:

1O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.

Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it.

Those of us who have given our lives to Christ have only begun this journey. We have only begun to understand the power in this relationship, the vastness of the grace and the love that God has for us. There are many things that remain obviously unpredictable as we throw ourselves headlong into profound and glorious uncertainty. Yet, our faith remains steadfast because we know Whose we are; we are sons and daughters of the One who loves us.

Deuteronomy7:6-8  For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the Lord loved you.

Ephesians 1:4-5 Before the creation of the world, he chose us through Christ to be holy and perfect in his presence. Because of his love he had already decided to adopt us through Jesus Christ. He freely chose to do this.

Ephesians 1:7-8 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us in all wisdom and insight

John 10:28  I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

Does this overwhelm you? Does it awe you? Does it nearly drown you in God’s capacity to love you without condition? To know who you are at the core of your being? Are you ready to let go of the idea that you must achieve God’s love, and simply receive it?

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Place my yoke over your shoulders, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble. Then you will find rest for yourselves because my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Here’s how The Message puts it:

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Keep company. Yeah. No pressure. Just open your hands and heart. Breathe in and receive.

  1. And the amazing thing is…how much we have our eyes opened when we do keep company with Truth. (Which Christ is the embodiment of) Truth goes so far beyond what our minds can perceive – He is just the beginning to lead us to the end. In the beginning was word – do no fear I have overcome the world. I think simple faith is beautiful, though, I also love that He offers for us to journey deeper into the mystery – if we choose. And all that we can do – by keeping His company all the time deep within us…written on our hearts. Ingrained. The centre of it all. And sometimes we may not understand the whys and what’s we are led to, but if we can know for certain HE IS our centre – faith must take us where he desires us to go. All be it against what WE think is true or even right. I really think in handing it over to Him to be in control we put absolute faith into the passageways we are sent along.Though the world may frown – it is the places we find the biggest and most valuable lessons of truth – the places where Angels fear to tread..by our side He stands and holds our hand through the darkest caverns, through the snakes pit into the lions den. Be brave – be bold – and be courageous!

    Lovely post Susan. 🙂

    1. ” it is the places we find the biggest and most valuable lessons of truth.” This is it, yes? Though we may be called innocent or weak by the world, our dependence on and trust in God gives us the strength, courage, certainty and peace that reaches deep into our core. This is why we follow.
      Thank you, B. 🙂

  3. I have been stuck on preaching and teaching God’s love for us for sometime now. To me the tie breaker, key to the door, what makes me tick, the way to freedom and the ability to walk this walk I am called to walk. I tell everyone I can Get it in your head God has and always will love you. Quit trying so hard. I miss your post Susan. I share your love for God and mankind often with others . To allow another poor soul to have hope and know how easy his yoke is. This post fires that. Well done. When I read this post it made me want to shout and give Glory to God. The Love of God. Everyone preach it!

    Much love Tom

  4. What a great post from one of my favorite chapters. Another theme that runs throughout is the sovereignty of God. To me one of the most comforting doctrines in Scripture. I love vs.5 “He hems me in”. What comfort.

  5. Susan, great post from one of my most loved chapters in the Bible. Another theme that runs through your texts today is the sovereignty of God. To me it is the most comforting doctrine in all of Scripture. I love the word picture in verse 5. “He hems us in”. What a comfort.

  6. John 10:28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

The Word “I Give” and “Eternal Life” and “Never Perish” and “No One Will Snatch Them”! The Love that God gives is so blessed. It is so sad that so many people continue to blame all bad things on God when He has taken every bad thing we have ever done or will ever do and forgave them and forgot them. All we have to do is believe in Him. He gave us a choice. All we have to do is decide.

Great post! May God bless you every day Susan.

    1. Oh, thank you, Bill. He is so great, so gracious. We can only continue to pray that others will see him for who he really is – compassionate and loving beyond our comprehension. And continue to reflect his light and love through the Spirit he gave us.

      Bless you and yours, Bill.

  7. I thank God for you. I stumbled upon this early this morning and as I read the poignant, yet beautiful words you shared, my heart quivered with excitement and confirmed that God is in the midst of my troubles. Many of the very words you spoke I spoke to God this morning as I prayed and declared what he said to me in his Word to remind myself of his love for me. Trusting and believing that nothing is too hard for Him, no matter what I go through. Thank you my sister in Christ for affirmation and confirmation. Your words touched my heart early this morning. God bless.
